Liverpool actor Philip Shaun McGuinness lands role in remake of Godfather scene.

26 year old Kirkby based Liverpool actor Philip Shaun McGuinness has landed the role of Michael Corleone in a remake of the Today I Settled All Family Business scene from The Godfather film.

McGuiness will play the role alongside the original cast member Gianni Russo who will again play Carlo Rizzi, the role he made famous in the legendary 1972 film.

Gianni Russo is in Liverpool for a special screening of The Godfather at the ODEON Liverpool One (4 July, 7pm) and his legendary Frank Sinatra set Gianni Russo: One Night Only at the Albert Dock (5 July).

The film will be shot at Static Gallery, Liverpool on the morning of the 5 July and forms a key part of the forthcoming HARBINGER art installation by Paul Sullivan.

The scene will be filmed by Lee Isserow.

Paul Sullivan/Director of STATIC Gallery states:

“I am delighted for Philip. We had over forty people audition for the role of Michael, ranging from professional actors to non-actors and it was a very tough process of selecting the right actor for the scene. The scene is one element of the forthcoming HARBINGER art installation that will be exhibited internationally from 2016 so it was great to see such a young talent from Liverpool land the role”

Philip Shaun McGuinness states:

“I am completely thrilled and when auditioning I had a very strange experience that made me feel like I had a good chance at landing the role.

I am big believer in destiny and signs, as odd as it may seem to some and there was a big one whilst auditioning for this role.

Whilst on my way to the audition I had just left the train and was walking through Liverpool Central Station. I could hear this faint but very familiar sound. As I exited on to Bold Street there was a lovely man directly opposite me playing the main theme of the Godfather on the trumpet, of all the things he could be playing! So here I am fully suited and booted, slicked back hair and trilby walking down Bold Street, with the theme song of the Godfather playing behind me. If anything could make me feel like Michael Corleone that would be it! It was one of those moments where I felt like fate was telling me what was to come and it really gave me a confidence boost to say that I could win the role.

The role is now an iconic part of Cinema history thanks to the wonder of Mr Al Pacino. I grew up watching Pacino in everything from Carlitto’s Way to The Devil’s Advocate and he has always been a great inspiration to me as a young actor. Now I’m going to be part of the huge opportunity and to act alongside Gianni Russo under the direction of Paul Sullivan and his team. For me this is an incredibly exciting, if a little daunting experience.

After the fantastic Stephen Graham playing Al Capone in Broadway Empire I feel that being from Kirkby is a good omen for playing American – Italian gangsters.

Gianni has had the very best in working with Al Pacino and Brando and now he will have to make do with me. I will try not to mess up the memories that Carlo and all of the fans across the UK have!

Sorry I can’t stay longer today I have to settle all family business.”
